[RP] Tough Love

I promised Break fic and I lied. I wrote it, but it came out so dark I couldn’t bring myself to inflict it on you guys. Sorry and you’re welcome, I guess. In lieu of Super Sadtimes, have another Astrani story. This is from a brief period when she lived with her cousin, Ambika.

“Astrani. What exactly do you think you’re doing?”

“Playin’.” The massive troll crouched on the stoop, poking at a pile of dirt with a stick. A dirty orange sundress tied at the top of each shoulder covered some of her equally dirty blue skin and left her muscular arms free to play. A pair of matching shorts saved onlookers from accidental impropriety; given Astrani’s extremely active nature and profound lack of self-consciousness, they were completely necessary. Poke poke.

“You’re filthy.” The annoyance in Ambika’s voice was almost tangible. Astrani kept poking.

“Sorry, Bika.” Poke.

Ambika sucked air through her clenched teeth and counted backward from ten with her eyes closed. When she opened them, she reached out with her foot and gave Astrani’s backside a good hard shove. The much larger troll giggled and looked up over her shoulder. “Bika play too?”

“No. Wash up and head out to the Crossroads, now. You’ve been under my feet all day and I have a visitor coming.”

“Awww, Bika…”

“Go on. Your armor’s hanging on the rack. I cleaned it, again. Don’t get used to it,” she scolded. “I’m not going to take care of your messes forever.”

Astrani got to her feet and lumbered dejectedly into the small living quarters they shared. It’s temporary, Ambika had said. Don’t get comfortable. It’d been months and Astrani’s comfort in her cousin’s place was a foregone conclusion. The colorful clothes Ambika made for her were strewn over the corner where she slept, her toys cluttered the corners of every room, and every day Bika was grumping about something. Clean up after yourself and don’t get comfortable, sometimes I can’t believe you ate all the food again.

As she shrugged the chainmail over her head and fastened the buckles, Ambika lectured her. Astrani took it like a stone. The priestess wasn’t sure she even heard and repeated her instructions three times. “Go to the Crossroads. Ask the Sergeant for work. And make sure you get paid! I want to see at least one pocketful of silver when you come home. Money doesn’t grow on trees and you eat like a kodo.”

Astrani smiled brightly at her cousin and dipped down to envelop the little woman in an enthusiastic embrace. Ambika squawked at the indignity and kicked her feet, now dangling a good three feet off the ground.

“Put me down! I swear, if you don’t get out of here right this second I’m going to throw you off a cliff!”

Nonplussed, Astrani dropped Bika on the floor and galumphed out of the house, remembering to duck her head just in time to avoid knocking her brains out.

Dusting herself off and watching her cousin trundle off toward the flight tower, Ambika wondered if that might not be a bad thing.

Yay, Astrani! She’s so adorable. “COOKIES!”
